The New Dunedin Hospital Build

The New Dunedin Hospital Build

The New Dunedin Hospital Build aims to achieve exemplar healthcare design in New Zealand, supporting best current practice in models-of-care, and enabling an integrated digital hospital. The facility will be flexible, sustainable, and facilitate efficient patient flows and health-planning.

The masterplan provides the framework of the hospital design and is shaped by design principles and option assessment criteria developed by SDHB representatives and the project team. These principles not only showcase the aspects of the hospital that will best serve the health service delivery, but also the importance of the hospital in our city.

This project aims to deliver a hospital that supports a long-term plan for Dunedin’s urban renewal and improved place-making. The New Dunedin Hospital will be one of the city’s most important landmarks. Its large size will deem it as one of the tallest single standing structures that is ideally located in our city centre.

The Hospital Will:

• Be patient and whānau focused

• Provide future adaptability, flexibility, and sustainability

• Be operationally cost effective and efficient

• Promote healthy people spaces

• Optimise use of total health system resources

LOCATION

The Dunedin Hospital project is well underway. Programme Director, Mike Barns, says while we're very aware of the consenting process with the Dunedin City Council in respect of the heritage facades, there are harmful materials, such as asbestos, lead paint, as well as redundant plant equipment, that need to be removed. This work doesn’t require resource consent and is well into development. If you're a local to Dunedin, you will have noticed the changes around our city already.

CONCEPT

The New Dunedin Hospital will be a modern, efficient and patient-centred teaching hospital. With a five Green Star sustainability rating, the building's design and use of latest technology will mean greater efficiency, including patient flow around the hospital and better access to diagnostics and treatment spaces, reducing unnecessary delays. The new hospital’s build programme also delivers a substantial boost to Dunedin’s economy (contributing an estimated $429 million GDP) and will employ local businesses as well as hundreds of construction workers throughout the project.
